Long Story Short..
I have always had a creative mind, and as I got older I developed an analytical one. I needed to know why things worked the way they did, how I could make them better, and how changing your physical environment created different experiences.
I obtained my Interior Design and Business education from Western Michigan University.
My first job after graduating was working as a lead visual merchandiser at one of the largest residential furniture companies in the mid-west. THIS IS where my love for retail environments and design began. I won multiple showroom awards and collection contests through my decade of being on the floor and it fueled my passion. The practice of using interior design to promote sales, and being able to see the impact that my design decisions made, became a driving force in me.
While working as a visual I was able to volunteer and work alongside my Alma mater. In 2016, I was awarded Alumni of the year which kicked off my journey to becoming a college professor. THIS IS where my passion to empower others to tell their story through design developed.
Fall 2016... I was a first time professor and was only FIVE days away from the semester starting when I was hired. Was I CRAZY?? YES... Becoming a professor so young was terrifying but also one of my proudest accomplishments. There are no words to describe the lessons I learned while teaching multiple classes of talented young designers in drafting, space planning, design processes, and computer aided programming to support their solutions. After working with these young designers, and helping them develop concepts into design solutions...I was HOOKED on using design as a tool to EMPOWER others. I worked as a professor for the remainder of my years living in Kalamazoo.
Moving Back to Detroit...
Moving back to Detroit its been a whirlwind of new things and new experiences for my business. I jumped in head first and making moves ever since! I have continued in event design and have also launched services both in residential and merchandising design. Each of these services CELEBRATING and EMPOWERING others to use design to tell their story.
I am involved with organizations like:
Design Core Detroit
Embrace Creatives as a Digital Ambassador, Merchandising expert and Educator.
Tech Town as a Professional Service Network member assisting small businesses with retail merchandising through their Ask an Expert Program.
Through this involvement I have competed in community design competitions such as The Holiday Window Walk Contest in Capitol park In which I took home first place this past year.
My Collected Style...
"Stick to the things you really love. An honest room is always up to date" - Billy Baldwin"
I get asked this all the time, "Amanda what is YOUR style." Well, its Collected.
When I say collected it means I collect favorite parts from each standard design style to blend it into my own. I strongly believe that my style isn't just one specific genre, but a collection of all of my favorite characteristics from each.
For example, I love the distressed texture from a rustic/farmhouse style, but I also love the combination of materials and colors that the mid-century style uses. So in my space you may see a bright orange sofa with the rustic and distressed accessories.
I collect constantly in a literal sense as well. I am a thrift-er and a strong believer in the DIY attitude which normally means projects that take items collected and turning them into a design feature for the space.
My design style and approach to design is the basis for how I treat each clients project. I want to celebrate both their collected design style as well as the items they have collected over the years that tell their story.
